Many of us took photographs at the exhibition, and to feature each one would take up far too much space and memory.  I shall instead post a small number of the best pictures to give an impression of how the exhibition was set out.  I had intended to set up several galleries of photographs, but generally the maximum permitted size would not allow  the text contained within the photo, to be read. Even large photographs make reading the contents difficult, but it should be remembered that the original panels could be up to 10 foot wide.

The overall theme of the exhibition was " THE IMPACT OF WW1 AND ITS LEGACY".

The exhibition itself was split into several " sub-themes":
  • A Patriotic Village
  • An exhibition of Diaries, Photos, Letters and Stories from  100 years ago.
  • Local Soldiers
  • Billeted Troops
  • The Home Front
  • Village Families
  • Poetry and Prayers

My congratulations to the team from Holy Trinity ( Mike Hawtin, Tony Twiggs, John Walker, John Ayling and David Roberts.) who put the  display together. Not only did it take a lot of planning, but mounting it all so we could all see everything, also took a lot of time and effort. The cutting of the outline statues of the soldiers, as well as taking a lot of care, added a very special ambience to the whole exhibition.  Mike Hawtin also put together a very informative slide show which played continuously.

Admission fees taken at the door, plus additional donations meant that we were able to give £100 to the charity "Combat Stress", and £237.85 to the Royal British Legion.

                            Well done all of you

Letter of condolence sent to Mercy Segrave on the death of her brother,  March 1916, by her aunt.   I conclude from the translation that the photograph is of Mercy's brother Evelyn mentioned in the transcript.

A biplane, probably made by one of the troops in the trenches. Next to the plane in the "Tommy's" drinking beaker.
"Death Penny" awarded to the next of kin of those killed during the war.
Items of "Trench Art" made by the soldiers out of old shell casings etc.
The above "Roll of Honour" was discovered by Revd Lizzie Hood in 2017 whilst cleaning her office at the Vicarage, prior to re-decorating.  It had slid down behind the bureau, inherited from previous incumbents.  Originally it would have been on display in church during WW1.
This scroll accompanied the "Death Penny" shown in the gallery above.
