R.Richardson was referred to as the "Perpetual Curate" of Leverstock Green on the document with the agreement relating to "A Grant of £200 in aid of its erection was made by the Incorporated Society for Promoting the Enlargement, Building and Repair of Churches and Chapels on condition that the seats for 350 persons described on the annexed Plan should be set apart and declared to be forever “free” for the use of the poor for ever. The word “free” to be painted in a conspicuous manner on each free seat.”

received official licence to act as a stipendiary Curate in the parish of Leverstock Green when he was appointed as Priest in Charge,to the new church of St Barnabus, Queen's Square, Adeyfield.

St. Barnabus was a daughter church of Holy Trinity until it got its own parish. Whilst still being built, services were held initially in his garage, and later in a builder's hut, brought in for the purpose.

REVD. TREVOR LIGHTOWLER

(1979-1984)

Appointed Headmaster at Leverstock Green Church of England Primary School (Pancake Lane) in 1968. He studied for ordination between 1976 and 1979, and once ordained became ASSISTANT CURATE (non-stipendiary) at Holy Trinity, until he left Leverstock Green in order to take full time responsibility of a parish of his own. During the Interregnum (1982-1983), Revd Lightowler was the Priest in Charge at Holy Trinity.

From my personal knowledge between 1981 - 199?, Derek was associated with Holy Trinity (see below.)

REVD.BILL PRYCE (1979-1981)

Bill Pryce trained for the ministry at the same time as Trevor Lightowler, and featured in the parish magazine list for 1981, but was not listed in 1982. I have not as yet come across a photograph of him, so if anyone has a photo they are prepared to share, please contact me.

REVD. DEREK STRICKLAND. (Dates uncertain) We knew the Stricklands well until Derrek Retired as the Industrial Chaplain for Hemel Hempstead. They lived in a house in Crofts Path which belonged to the Church, but was subsequently sold off to a private individual after they moved. The whole family regularly attended at Holy Trinity, & Derek would help in officiating most Sundays, and would also preach regularly.

Ordained in June 1988 at Coventry Cathedral, after various post, Hitesh was licensed as Church of England Chaplain from February 1998 to July 2001 When he was given Permission to Officiate in the Diocese of St Albans when he became an Operational Manager in HM Prison The Mount at Bovingdon. Hitesh retired from HM Prison The Mount in June 2018. Hitesh has been assisting in the Parish with Licence to Officiate since Simon Cutmore was at Holy Trinity.

Seen to the right with wife Alex, toddler Matthew & Baby Ben following Ben's Baptism, 16th January 2005 at Holy Trinity. Ben was the first "vicarage" baby to be born and Baptised in Leverstock Green since Dorothy Durrant in 1906.

Robert Helme ~ For a long time the reason Robert Helme changed his name to Maschiter after leaving Leverstock Green was a mystery. A plaque under the Baptistry window reads: "In memory of Reverend Robert Maschiter, Vicar of this Church 1861 ~ 1871, who died June 26th 1909 aged 79. However, in 2019........(update coming soon)

Chambersbury ~ The parishes of Leverstock Green, Apsley End and Bennetts End were joined in 1980 to form the Team parish of Chambersbury. Until 2003 the Rector and the post of Vicar of Leverstock Green were synonymous. It was then decided that other members of the clergy team could apply for the position of Rector, and if one of the other team Vicars was appointed Leverstock Green's Vicar would be just another member of the clergy team. David Lawson, Vicar of St. Mary's Apsley, successfully applied for the position of Rector of Chambersbury. A new Vicar of Leverstock Green was then appointed.

In 2009 the parish of Chambersbury joined with Kings Langley to form the new Benifice of Langeli. The three districts resumed Parish status once more, along with Kings Langley. Leverstock Green, Bennetts End, Apsley & King Langley now being the four parishes within the benefice. David Lawson was appointed the Rector of the new Benefice.

PERPETUAL CURATES, VICARS & OTHERS WITH PERMISSION TO OFFICIATE

To quote from "Wikipedia" "The perpetual curate was a class of resident parish priest or incumbent curate within the United Church of England and Ireland. The term is found in common use mainly during the first half of the nineteenth century. The legal status of perpetual curate originated as an administrative anomaly in the 16th century." My 1972 edition of Chamber's Twentieth Century Dictionary defines a curate as "A clergyman in the Church of England assisting a Rector of Vicar."

When first consecrated in October 1849, Holy Trinity was a daughter church of St. Michael's St. Albans, and wasn't created a parish in its own right According to the History of Hemel Hempstead and the Victoria County History, the Ecclesiastical parish of Leverstock Green was formed in 1850. However, the ecclesiastical survey carried out on March 30th 1851 showed it still to be a consolidated chapelry at the time of the census. [ S1- p.248 ] [ VCH p.216 ][S323] Kelly's Directory for 1850 gives very scanty detail on Leverstock Green. There was no individual entry for the village, and no obvious entries in the Abbots Langley section where they were to be found in a subsequent copy of the directory. I am hoping that the Diocesan Office can shed a bit more light on the subject when I get a chance to contact them, as well as names of any additional clergy whose names I have not yet come across, if any. This first parish of Leverstock Green was huge and stretched to incorporate Apsley, Adeyfield, Nash Mills and Pimlico. It was however, only 20 years before it was to be reduced in size by another Parish created around a new church also built partly with the money and patronage of members of John Dickinson's family - namely Apsley End,

Local residents generally referred to our clergy as "Vicar", but I shall indicate other titles as well if I have evidence for them. In recent years of course with the creation first of the Parish of Chambersbury, and later the Benefice of Langelei some of our Vicars, also became Rectors.

Rev. Phillip E. Thomas joined Holy Trinity as Vicar in 1947. He was here during the Centenary Celebrations.

On Sunday 20th July 1952 - The Queen visited Hemel, principally to see the first stage of the residential building of the new town at Adeyfield, and to lay the foundation stone for St. Barnabus' Church. At this time the new church at Adeyfield was still to be part of the parish of Leverstock Green, and Rev. Philip Thomas (Perpetual Curate at Holy Trinity), along with Rev. Stokes (next in line), was presented to the Queen. The photo below was given to me at the time by a local resident who had purchased a copy at the time. (I also have a long standing agreement with the Gazette to allow me to publish their photos ( if relevant) on my website.

Revd. Helme's wife Blandina's maiden name was MASHITER. Her Uncle Thomas Mashiter stipulated in his will that her son Thomas and his son Edward, should change their name to Mashiter in order to inherit under his will. I assume that Robert did so as well so the family all had the same name.
